Folk scholar Chinnappa Gowda turns poet with ‘Kittale Hannalla‘

MANGALURU: Folk scholar and researcher K Chinnappa Gowda donned a different hat, that of a poet, here on Saturday. For on this day, his teacher B A Viveka Rai, former VC of KSOU and Kannada University released Kittale Hannalla, Chinnappa Gowda‘s maiden collection of poems, literally propelling his student to leave his mark in a hitherto unexplored literary domain. Gowda‘s literary works thus far have been in the domain of prose.

Averring that poetry is becoming rare in a literary world that sees more dramas – comic and tragic being churned out, Rai said poetry on the other hand is relevant for all times. There is difference between statement (in prose) and poetry and poetry begins where statement ends, he said, adding Gowda‘s maiden poetry offering, and certainly not his last, helps readers peel through layers of experience as one would do to an Orange to reach the fruit.

The work is also different in a way that unlike most observers of folk art who observe culture, glorify and then strive to encash it, Rai said, adding Gowda‘s work in general and poetry in particular, stays aloof from all these issues. Poetry transcends time and boundaries, he said, adding the poem on orange seller turned educationist Harekala Hajabba in this collection is a reflection of society‘s voice on if he (Hajabba) could do it, why not the others?

B Surendra Rao, historian and Gowda‘s long term friend said the collection leaves a lot more unsaid and this is the hall mark of a poet. “The poet in Chinnappa Gowda has truly come out in this work,” he said, adding fans of Gowda should expect more such literary gems to flow from his pen. Gowda thanked Kallur Nagesh of Aakrithi Aashaya Publication for giving him a forum to release 30 of his poems – new and old alike in this maiden offering.
