Sensex falls 289 points to close at 37,397

NEW DELHI: Equity indices on Tuesday ended on a lower note with benchmark slumping nearly 300 points amid heavy selling in financial, auto and oil & gas stocks as tepid corporate earnings and auto sector woes weighed on investors‘ sentiment. Besides, sustained foreign fund outflows continued to spook domestic equity market.

The 30-share index finished 289.13 points or 0.77 per cent lower at 37,397.24. While, the broader fell 103.80 points or 0.93 per cent to close at 11,085.40.

Top losers in the sensex pack include Yes Bank, IndusInd Bank, Hero MotorCorp, Sun Pharma, SBI, Tata Steel, Vedanta and Tata Motors, with their stocks sliding as much as 9.13 per cent.

While, Bharati Airtel, TCS, HCL Tech, ITC, HDFC Bank, LT, Hindustan Unilever, Infosys and NTPC were the top gainers, with their shares rising as much as 3.19 per cent.

On NSE, except for Nifty IT — which gained 0.65 per cent — all other sub-indices ended in red with Nifty PSU bank and Nifty Metal sliding as much as 4.88 per cent.

Shares of Coffee Day Enterprise tanked about 20 per cent after its chairman and managing director VG Siddhartha went missing. The stock touched a 52-week low of Rs 154.05.

While police have launched a massive search operation to find VG Siddhartha, founder of Cafe Coffee Day, shares of Coffee Day Enterprises tanked as much as 20% with stock touching a 52-week low of Rs 154.05. Siddhartha has been missing since Monday evening. The company in a notification to exchanges assured “continuity of business” by a competent leadership team.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) remained net sellers in the capital markets, pulling out Rs 704.42 crore on Monday, as per provisional data.
